Is crop insurance available?
Yes. Beginning with the 2026 crop year, USDA RMA made camelina crop insurance available nationwide through written agreements. Coverage is available only for camelina grown under contract with a processor. Talk to your VISION agronomist or a crop insurance agent for details on your area.
How does the Guaranteed Offtake Agreement work?
We guarantee purchase of all grain produced under contract, at competitive, transparent pricing — backed by strong partnerships across the value chain.
How is storage and transportation handled?
We partner with storage locations nationwide. Growers are responsible for transportation to their closest location.
Can camelina follow wheat or other cereals in rotation?
Yes. Camelina fits well behind cereals and is commonly grown in rotation with wheat, barley, and other small grains.
What happens if I get an early frost after planting?
Camelina is frost-tolerant and germinates at soil temperatures as low as 39°F, so an early cold snap after planting isn't typically a concern the way it would be for less hardy crops.
Does camelina need pollinators?
No. It's self-pollinating, with a brief 2–3 week bloom period.
What herbicide carryover should I watch for?
Avoid fields treated with Group 2 or Group 14 herbicides (like Beyond or Pursuit) the prior year — residual carryover can affect stand establishment.
Should I rotate out of camelina or other Brassica crops?
Yes. Rotating out of Brassica crops helps manage disease pressure, particularly downy mildew.
What if my seed comes in too wet at harvest?
Above 10% moisture, seed is subject to rejection. Run air on the grain for 2–3 weeks post-harvest and monitor closely for heating and spoilage if you're storing at higher moisture.
Do I need special equipment to grow camelina?
No. All conventional small-grain equipment and tillage practices are compatible with camelina. Your VISION agronomist will provide guidance tailored to your setup.
